Table of Contents
References → Table of Contents inserts a TOC from your Heading styles. Rebuild it after edits with right-click → Update Field.
Captions
Right-click an image/table → Insert Caption adds Table 1: ... numbering. Word tracks the numbering automatically and builds a list:
- References → Insert Table of Figures lists all captions.
- Cross-reference lets text say "see Table 1" that stays correct.
Citations and Bibliography
- References → Manage Sources to add books/web pages (APA, MLA, Chicago...).
- Insert Citation at the point of use.
- Bibliography → Bibliography produces the reference list.
Footnotes and Endnotes
References → Insert Footnote adds a numbered note at the page bottom; Endnotes collect at the document end. Word renumbers automatically.
Index
Mark text with Mark Entry, then Insert Index at the end - Word builds an alphabetised index from your marks.
Key Points
- TOC + captions + indexes all depend on styles and marks - keep those consistent.
- Cross references and numbering update themselves - trust them.
- Use Manage Sources once and reuse the same citations everywhere.
