Margins and Page Size
On the Layout tab set margins (Normal 2.54cm or Narrow 1.27cm), orientation (Portrait/Landscape) and paper size (A4, Letter).
Sections and Breaks
- Page break (Ctrl+Enter) - start a new page anytime.
- Section break (Next page) - splits the document so one section can have different margins/orientation.
- Column break - move to the next column inside newspaper-style columns.
Tip: use a section break before a landscape chart or before changing margins for one part of a report.
Headers and Footers
Double-click the top (header) or bottom (footer) margin to edit:
- Insert page numbers: Insert → Page Number (Top/Bottom/Margin).
- Add document title, author, date via Insert → Header > Edit Header.
- Different first page: check Different First Page so page 1 has no header.
- Link to Previous turns headers/footers off between sections.
Close with the red X or double-click the body.
Multiple Columns
Layout → Columns to format text like a newsletter; Word flows text down the first column, then the next.
Key Points
- Page breaks beat pressing Enter many times - formatting stays tidy.
- Sections unlock mixed margins and orientations in one file.
- Headers/footers apply section by section; untick Link to Previous to customise.
