Inserting Pictures
Insert → Pictures → This Device (or Stock Images / Online Pictures). Word inserts the image at the cursor.
Text Wrapping
Select the image and choose a Layout Options wrap style:
- In Line with Text - the default; the image acts like a big character.
- Square / Tight - text flows around the graphic.
- Behind / In Front of Text - for watermarks and layered designs.
Resizing and Cropping
- Drag a corner handle to resize proportionally (Shift+drag keeps ratio).
- Picture Format → Crop to trim edges; Crop to Shape for circles.
- Use Alt text: right-click → Edit Alt Text, so screen readers describe the image.
Shapes and Icons
Insert → Shapes for arrows, boxes, circles and flowcharts; Insert → Icons for modern flat graphics. Hold Shift while drawing a shape to keep it square/circular.
SmartArt and Charts
- SmartArt - process lists, org charts and hierarchy diagrams with styled boxes.
- Chart - a real Excel chart embedded in Word; edit numbers in the linked data sheet to change the chart.
Text Boxes
Insert → Text Box for a framed quote or callout. Boxes float with their own wrap - they do not disturb surrounding text.
Key Points
- Wrapping controls how text flows around graphics - learn Square and Tight.
- Always add Alt text for accessibility.
- Embedded charts and SmartArt stay editable inside Word.
