What is Microsoft Word?
Microsoft Word is a word processor for creating text documents: reports, letters, resumes, essays, books and flyers. You type text, format it, add pictures and tables, then print or share as a PDF.
The Word Window
- Ribbon - the strip of command tabs at the top (Home, Insert, Design, Layout, References, Mailings, Review, View).
- Quick Access Toolbar - the small bar with Save, Undo, Redo.
- Document area - where you type; the blinking cursor marks the insertion point.
- Status bar - page count, word count, view buttons at the bottom.
Opening Word
Start Word and choose Blank document or a template from the Backstage view. The Backstage (File tab) is where you create, open, save, print and export.
Zoom and Views
- Print Layout - how the page will look on paper (default).
- Read Mode - distraction-free reading.
- Web Layout - view as a web page.
- Draft - fast text editing without layout.
Key Points
- The Ribbon holds almost every command - hover any icon to see its purpose.
- Watch the ruler and status bar for page breaks and word count.
- Use the Search box at the top of the window to find any command quickly.
