What is PowerPoint?
Microsoft PowerPoint builds presentations: files (.pptx) of slides shown on a projector or screen. Each slide presents one idea with text, visuals and multimedia - the shape of most business and classroom talks.
The PowerPoint Window
- Slide pane - the large area showing the current slide.
- Slide thumbnail pane - the column on the left with all slides; drag to reorder.
- Ribbon - Home, Insert, Design, Transitions, Animations, Slide Show, Review, View.
- Notes pane - speaker notes only you see (mostly) - perfect for rehearsal.
Views
- Normal - edit slides one at a time (default).
- Outline view - edit titles and text as a structured list.
- Slide Sorter - see every slide; drag to reorder.
- Slide Show - present full screen; press F5 to start from the beginning, Shift+F5 from the current slide.
Creating a Presentation
File → New → Blank presentation, or a template. Type a title slide, then keep adding slides with Home → New Slide (Ctrl+M).
Key Points
- One idea per slide keeps the audience with you.
- Slide thumbnails are your story outline - reorder them to tighten the narrative.
- Notes keep you on script while slides stay visual.
