Connect and verify your site

Create an AdSense account, add your site, and place the small verification snippet Google gives you in your page <head>. Google then reviews the site (this can take days to a couple of weeks) before ads start showing.

Add ads.txt

Create a file at https://yoursite.com/ads.txt listing Google as an authorised seller of your ad inventory. It protects your revenue from ad fraud, and AdSense will nag you until it is present:

Use the exact line AdSense shows you (with your publisher ID).

Auto ads vs manual units

Auto ads: paste one code snippet and Google automatically places ads where it predicts they will perform. Easiest to start; less control over placement.
Manual ad units: you create each ad unit (display, in-article, in-feed) and drop its code exactly where you want it. More work, more control – best once you know your layout.

A common approach is Auto ads first, then switch key pages to manual units once you see what earns.
