Design for real people, not yourself

The most common design mistake is building for your own assumptions. UX research replaces guesses with evidence about who your users are and what they need.

Research methods

  • User interviews – talk to real or potential users about their goals and frustrations.
  • Surveys – gather patterns at scale.
  • Analytics – see where existing users drop off.
  • Competitor analysis – learn what already works (and annoys) in your space.

Personas

A persona is a short, believable profile of a typical user – their goals, context and pain points. It keeps the team focused on a real person:

Priya, 28 - junior developer
Goal: learn Spring Boot quickly for a new job
Pain: scattered tutorials, no clear path
Needs: structured lessons she can follow on her phone

Journey mapping

Map the steps a user takes to reach a goal (discover → sign up → learn → return). At each step note what they think, feel and where they struggle – those struggles are your design opportunities.

Key points

  • Research replaces assumptions with evidence.
  • Interviews, surveys, analytics and competitor analysis each reveal different things.
  • Personas keep the team designing for a real person.
  • Journey maps expose the friction points worth fixing.
