Turning On Ads and Connecting AdSense
Connect AdSense to get paid
Ad money from YouTube is paid through Google AdSense. During YPP setup you link (or create) an AdSense account; that is where your earnings accumulate and from where you are paid. One AdSense account can cover both your website and your channel.
The ad types on your videos
- Skippable in-stream – viewers can skip after 5 seconds; the most common format.
- Non-skippable in-stream – up to ~15–20 seconds, must be watched.
- Bumper ads – short (6-second) non-skippable clips.
- In-feed and Shorts ads – shown in feeds and between Shorts.
- Mid-roll – ads inside videos longer than a few minutes.
You choose which formats to allow per video; enabling more can raise revenue but affects viewer experience.
Mid-rolls: place them well
For longer videos, YouTube can insert mid-roll ads. Let them fall at natural breaks between segments, not mid-sentence. Well-placed mid-rolls barely dent retention; badly placed ones make viewers leave.
What you actually earn
Ad earnings depend on RPM (revenue per 1,000 views) and CPM (what advertisers pay), which vary a lot by topic, audience country and season. Finance and tech tend to pay more than entertainment. You keep roughly 55% of watch-page ad revenue.
